One spring morning I left a microphone by the window to record birdsong while I did my stretches. A month later I was writing this little piano tune and came up with a few twinkly repeated phrases to include at the end of each main section.
Listening back to the tune later on, I thought it would be interesting to hear how it sounded accompanied by some of the birdsong I had recorded. I dragged in the bird track and layered it over the tune. Cue sonic serendipity: listening to the two tracks simultaneously, the robin's chuckling calls happened to exactly match the tempo and rhythm of the piano's five-and-seven-note phrases. How about that?!

Though there is emphasis on the American robin's song/calls, the song also features American crows, dark-eyed juncos and steller's jays.

The birds were compensated with fresh bath water, peanuts and plenty of leaf litter to scrounge around in for insects and worms.
